ESSAY 32
THE
"DEVIL MADE ME DO IT"
MYTH
Flip Wilson made us all laugh when he used the phrase,
"The Devil made me do it!" But what a message it has for us
today!
We make progress when we act responsibly. Psychiatrist
William Glasser relates how his patients were cured when he
was able to get them to acknowledge past irresponsibility and
then to act responsibly. [William Glasser, M.D., REALITY
THERAPY (New York: Harper and Row, Pub., 1965)]. Dr.
John Drakeford has used a similar approach in group therapy
which he calls "integrity therapy." [John W. Drakeford,
INTEGRITY THERAPY (Nashville: Broadman Press, 1967)].
Drakeford's practice was very successful. He chronicles the
cure of one of his patients--a homosexual. (John W.
Drakeford, FORBIDDEN LOVE (Waco, TX: Word Books, 1971)].
Human beings tend to rationalize away their irresponsi-
ble actions. We blame circumstances, environment, God, the
devil and everyone else for our own failings. When God con-
fronted Adam for his disobedience, Adam excused himself with,
"The WOMAN YOU put here with me. . ." (Genesis 3:12, NIV),
blaming Eve and even GOD! Then God approached Eve and she
said, "The SERPENT deceived me. . ." (Genesis 3:13, NIV),
blaming the Devil--in other words, "The Devil made me do
it!"
The truth is that we can't change many bad things that
happen to us, but we do have control over our own decisions
and actions. When we acknowledge irresponsibility and
correct it, we are on the way to healing.
Sow a thought, and reap an act.
Sow an act, and reap a habit.
Sow a habit, and reap a character.
Sow a character, and reap a destiny.

The craving for alcohol or drugs is a sickness, an
addiction, a malconditioning. The homosexual desire is a
sickness, a malconditioning, a sexual addiction. There is
help. There is hope.
